Plastic surgery gone badMar-09-2010
How far would you go to get a better butt? Six New Jersey women have been hospitalized after receiving buttocks-enhancing injections that may have contained the same material used to caulk bathtubs. The quest for a more shapely rear end left six New Jersey women in the hospital, suffering from deep skin infections
The state health department says the women needed surgery and antibiotics after receiving injections from someone with no medical license.
Investigators are trying to determine if industrial silicone, the kind you'd find in caulk, was injected into these women. They say it could have been a combination of silicone and petroleum jelly. Cosmetic surgeon Monty Monokakalis says some liquid silicone is medically approved, but industrial silicone is dangerous. The industrial version hardens and has to be surgically removed if there is a problem.
The health department is looking for whoever gave the injections that were not administered in a medical facility but inside people's homes or other locations.
The state epidemiologist says the women were all from Essex and Union County and hospitals reported their condition to the health department. It's not known if the women knew each other and the health department says the women have been reluctant to offer information.
